Games to Help You Prepare for the Benchmark

With the next benchmark exam coming up this Thursday (December 17), why not hone your math skills with some of the fun games at Math Playground. Mastering games such as "Percent Shopping," "The Multiplication Game," and "Alien Angles" will help you get a good grade on the benchmark. Good luck!
Comment on this post. Tell us what game you played and how it ties in with what you've learned this year in math class!

Riding on Angles

Thanks to Zachary B. for sending in this photo of angles he saw in the real world! Looks like he is pretty close on his estimates of the degree measures (although the spelling is a little off :) ). Way to go!!

On Thursday, when we learned how even a small miscalculation in degrees can send a flight far off course, several of you had asked about where to find the free Google Earth program. Just follow this link. Then click the "download" button.

GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, NORTHERN IRELAND

Look at the shape of the tops of each stone...how did this happen? Is this a trick? Is it man-made? Do the research and find out more. Just do a search for "Giant's Causeway" and unwrap the mystery. Post a comment and let everyone know what you've learned and earn some extra credit. Use your first name and last initial (ex: Michael J.) and post as "Anonymous".

Click on the "Comment" link to tell us where you've seen them. Also, estimate the approximate measure of the angle you saw. Each student who posts a comment will get five stamps for their group on Tuesday.

A triangle has three sides and three angles. A quadrilateral has four sides and four angles. Can you figure out the names of shapes other than the ones we talked about in class? For examples, how many sides does an icosahedron have?
In the comments section, post the name of a polygon (that we didn't talk about in class), and how many sides it has. Each group that has a person comment will get five stamps. Remember: Only post your first name and last initial.

Parent Support: TAKS Informational Booklets

The purpose of the information booklets is to help Texas educators, students, parents, and other stakeholders understand more about the TAKS™ tests. These booklets are not intended to replace the teaching of the TEKS curriculum, provide the basis for the isolated teaching of skills in the form of narrow test preparation, or serve as the single information source about every aspect of the TAKS™ program. However, we believe that the booklets provide helpful explanations as well as show enough sample items, reading and writing selections, and prompts to give educators a good sense of the assessment.

Follow the hyperlink and you will gain access to the TAKS Mathematics, 6th Grade PDF. Make sure your printer settings are at 100% if you decide to print the information booklets. Enjoy!

Wires are Crossed with Cross-multiplication

In our classrooms, we've been having a lot of lively discussion about cross multiplication (i.e. the X-Man and Butterfly methods). Yeah, we know it works very well for comparing fractions, but why does it work?

Because you're on this blog right now, I urge you to go a step further. Get on your favorite search engines and see if you can find out why cross multiplication works.

Don't sweat it, math is your friend!

Welcome to class! In sixth grade math, we’re going to learn a lot of things, but the most important is that math is your friend. You’ve got nothing to fear when you walk into your math classroom. Every problem will be explained, and if it still doesn’t make sense, we’re going to find another way to explain it. There are elements of math in virtually every aspect of life; that’s why it’s so important for us to build a good foundation in it. When you leave the class at the end of the school year, it’s my goal for you to have that foundation.

Things are pretty sparse on the blog right now, but in the coming weeks, it will really take off. Make this blog your destination for homework assignments, helpful hints, and other things related to class. This is going to be a great school year and we’re looking forward to working with each and every one of you!
